It all started in the mid-1970’s when two high school friends, Jim Birch and Lucio Proni, built home loudspeakers for fun.  Initially, they sold to friends, attaching their initials to the business.  In the late 1990s, they started competing in sound competitions, winning national championships and wowing car audio enthusiasts around the United States, with their own brand, JL Audio.

From operating out of a tiny Miramar warehouse, the business continued to expand, moving to its current 157,583 square foot space in 1998.  JL Audio entered the marine and home audio markets in 2004.  Over its 44-year history, the Miramar operation has grown from just Jim and Lucio to now employing 530 employees.  In the last two years, JL Audio staff has increased by more than 40 percent, and continues to expand its product line and its footprint by 53,000 square feet.  Now, JL Audio products number more than 1000 in total and are considered to be the highest quality car, marine and home audio products available.

“JL Audio has been really lucky to call Miramar home,” said JL Audio president Andy Oxenhorn, who joined the company in 1996.  “Since we started, we’ve focused no hiring locally, producing products in the U.S. and treating our employees like family.  Over the years, the City of Miramar has been very supportive and helpful as we grew the business and expanded our facility.  It’s a great place to do business.”
