[ARCHIVED] NATIONAL ‘BAN THE BOX’ INITIATIVE GETS A LOCAL NOD WITH CITY OF MIRAMAR COMMISSION ENDORSEMENT

On April 20, 2017, the City of Miramar Commission voted to implement the National ‘Ban the Box’ Initiative as a new fair chance hiring practice for city employees. The goal of ‘Ban the Box’ is to increase employment opportunities for people with a rehabilitated criminal history. When placed into practice, ‘Ban the Box’ removes past criminal history questions at the applicant stage.

This largely open-minded initiative will not include job vacancies within the Police or Fire Department. It is also important to note that ‘Ban the Box’ still folds in the consideration of criminal history at later stages of employment; as doing so is a business necessity that mitigates workplace safety and negligent hiring.

“The City of Miramar has now joined other progressive cities and counties throughout the United States that have adopted fair chance hiring practices”, stated the City’s Human Resources Director, Melanie McLean.
