[ARCHIVED] PHASE II CONTRACTOR APPROVAL BY COMMISSION AUTHORIZES MORE CANAL IMPROVEMENTS IN HISTORIC MIRAMAR

Miramar’s 632 canals and embankments East of University is City-owned and maintained.  In support of the preservation of this infrastructure asset, Miramar City Commission approved a commitment to fund a planned 2nd phase of work in Historic Miramar in an amount of $197,640 at its August 3, 2017 board meeting.  The Commission Resolution approving this 2nd phase has awarded Allstate Resource Management, Inc. this task by way of a competitively bid process.  This process represents the important continuation of work Public Works does to ensure that Drainage System Improvements occur in the City.

The planning for this project begun in 2012, when the City retained R. J. Behar & Associates to perform an engineering feasibility and needs assessment study of the City canal system. This process included hydraulic analysis of the canals and an evaluation of the condition of the embankment along a its 632 private and city owned waterfront properties.  In doing so, it activates and ensures that shoreline restoration, embankment stabilization, and erosion control is completed in the city.

Phase I of the project commenced with the City Commission’s award of two agreements on January, 27, 2016 and March 2, 2016 to vendors for the construction of drainage system canal improvements.  This process has restored and repaired 22 properties to date utilizing geotextile tubes to sediment fill areas of concern.
