The City of Miramar was incorporated on May 26, 1955. In the ensuing decades, this linear City has grown rapidly, and expanded its territory well beyond its original boundaries to the west. In this time, the area that represents University Drive to State Road 7 and Pembroke Road to Countyline Road, has affectionately become known as Historic Miramar. It was the place that Miramar’s budding community held its original city hall and utilized the most to bring the community together for celebrations like its Annual Tree Lighting. At the Commission’s Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Board meeting, the moniker Historic Miramar was officially coined to denote the historical and cultural significance of this area of the city.
Historic Miramar houses some of the City’s original infrastructure, with architectural designs dating back many decades in City buildings, as well as residential and commercial communities and parks. At the City’s board meeting, Commissioner Darlene Riggs, acknowledged that, “…..cementing the name Historic Miramar publicly acknowledges its historical value, adds community presence and promotes the general welfare of residents.
