On Tuesday, February 13, 2018, Miramar City Commission paid homage to African Nations by denouncing disparaging comments made of these Nations by Donald Trump. The City’s decision to do so, came with an adoption of a Resolution to memorialize a stance to counter these comments with support.
This decision was in direct alignment with President Trump’s statements made at a January 11, 2018 meeting, had with several Members of Congress in the White House. It was at this meeting that a discussion on a proposed bipartisan immigration compromise for permanent protection to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and other countries that have recently lost Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) designation was the topic.
These comments have drawn local, national and international attention and have recognized the first-hand accounting of those meeting participants present; when President Trump allegedly made them. They have also been publicly confirmed by numerous direct and indirect sources. In addition, they have also been decried by many in the international community; including a United Nations human rights spokesman, an African Union spokesperson, the President of Haiti, El Salvador, the President of Senegal, the Botswana Government, and the South African Government.
As a formality, the Miramar City Commission has also directed its’ City Clerk to distribute this Resolution to President Trump, the Congressional Delegation, and the Department of Homeland Security.
