Hello, Miramar!
From East Miramar to Sunset Lakes, it is my privilege to represent our beautiful city daily—within our communities, across Broward County, and on the national stage. This past year, my fellow commissioners and I approved the 2025 budget without increasing our mileage rate. We secured a new contract for the General Association of Municipal Employees, Firefighters of Miramar Benevolent Association and Broward County Police Benevolent Association and ensured funding for essential public safety resources, including a new fire truck and additional police officers. Safety remains our top priority. I’m happy to announce that we’ve obtained a grant for 12 new Police Officers, with recruitment already underway. In education, I’ve championed initiatives to support our schools, including welcoming students back to school, supporting cultural programs at Coral Cove, and providing dental screenings and school supplies for our summer campers. I also collaborated with college professors to offer free Creole and Spanish lessons to residents.
Engagement with our community remains vital. I hosted our annual HOA roundtable, connecting with many of our communities and visiting others like Murano, Silver Shores, and Country Club Ranches to discuss key issues, including Mami Dade County building a proposed incinerator near Miramar, an issue which I oppose. It was so much fun to see families from near and far at our Miramar Mile Run and Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day walking and running. Congratulations to all of the winners. Through partnerships with local churches and organizations, we’ve organized book bags, turkeys and holiday toys giveaways, to support families in need.
I’m honored to serve as the first woman of color elected as Chair of the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). We celebrated the opening of a pedestrian bridge that enhances safety and connectivity for our residents. As President of the 2024 National League of Cities Women in Municipal Government, I brought the national conference to South Florida, hosting impactful events in Miramar, Hollywood, and Miami Gardens. Thank you to the businesses that supported this and other community events including, Waste Pro, Memorial Hospital, Aetna, Cleveland’s Ice Cream, Florida Blue, Gilen Benefits Group and others. We could not have done it without you! Thank you to all who volunteer by serving on boards, organizing event or in any capacity that you have volunteered for the City of Miramar. Thank you for your time and your service.
I have launched Colbourne Constituent Tuesday every 4th Tuesday to meet with residents and hear concerns. I look forward to these one-on-one meetings to hear your thoughts and find resolutions to issues you may be facing.
I am confident that together, we will continue building the city we love—One Miramar Strong!
Thank you for your support!
Commissioner Yvette Colbourne

Women in Municipal Government (WIMG)
Greetings WIMG Members!
I am proud to report on our successful 2024 NLC WIMG Summer Conference that took place last month in South Florida. Much care and effort went into planning this event, and it paid off!
The City of Miramar rolled out the red carpet for 100 WIMG members. This event brought together women in local government to learn about local policy issues, discuss federal advocacy concerns, expand their networks with female elected officials and explore creative solutions to challenges experienced in their communities. Over three days, attendees participated in engaging sessions, leadership-building activities, mobile city tours, and invaluable discussions on topics unique to their roles as women in local government. These included addressing domestic violence, youth empowerment and the pipeline for future women leaders, housing access, and resources for families and older residents.
Highlights of the event included inspiring speakers such as Carmen Ortiz-McGhee, Chief Operating Officer of the National Association of Investment Companies, Wendy Doyle, Chief Executive Officer of United WE, and Burnadette Norris-Weeks, Founder and Chair of the Women of Color Empowerment Institute. U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz delivered a video greeting, and Linda Parker, Ph.D., President and CEO of Women in Distress, shared valuable insights. Major Ty Shaw-Williams from the Miramar Police Department, Katherine Randall, Chief Housing Administrator for the City of Miramar, FL, Maria Hernandez, LCSW, Community Impact and Chief Program Officer for the United Way of Broward County, and Jasmine Baldwin, CEO of the Florida Community Development Corporation, also contributed their expertise.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to make this conference a resounding success!
Onward to NLC City Summit! The WIMG Board and membership will meet on Wednesday, November 13, at 11:00am and our WIMG luncheon is scheduled for Friday, November 15, from 11:00am to 1:00pm ET.
Best Regards,
Yvette Colbourne
